He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty – Psalms 91:1
The term “acolyte” originates from the Greek word “acolytos,” which translates to “companion” or “helper.” The ministry of acolytes has its foundations in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. Notably, the prophet Samuel assisted Eli, the Levite priest, and Elisha assisted Elijah the Prophet. These individuals were called to serve at the Holy of Holies, recognizing their service as an offering to God and coming prepared to fully participate and assist in worship.
An acolyte is a clergy member consecrated to serve at the Holy Altar, taking on the role of angels who continuously praise and serve God. Their primary goal is to glorify the Lord. A crucial concept for an acolyte to follow when serving at the altar is:
- “I open my mouth, O Lord, to bless your holy name; I have cleansed my heart from all evil and distracting thoughts. Allow me to enlighten my understanding to inflame my will that I may serve you worthily at thy Holy Altar.”
- Upon entering the Holy Altar, an acolyte must recite this prayer:
- “In this house have I entered, O God, and before thy throne have I worshipped. O heavenly King, forgive me all the sins that I have committed against thee.”
Currently, there are 6-8 dedicated acolytes serving in the Holy Madbaha on every service day. Mr. Tomin is in charge of the Acolytes Group. The altar servers ensure they arrive early to prepare everything for worship and also assist in leading the songs.
